"Squarefoot Warehouse" - Jeff Haigh

Squarefoot Warehouse by Jeff Haigh. Photographs and Description by Jeff Haigh.
This small (about 22 inch x 6.5 inch) layout easily fits on a bookshelf - yet it supports lots of shunting activity as short trains move between "offstage" sidings under a water tank (rear, right) and warehouse doors (front, left). Saving space and key to the operation is a turntable that can carry a loco and one or two goods vans. Unusually, the well of the turntable has been cut down - but not its platform - hence, though it will not turn through 360˚, it will pivot giving the short train access to many different tracks. The layout was easy to construct and its cardboard buildings and foam-core base ensures lightweight as well as small size - good for a novice whose short of space!

Avyn-a-Llyin by Dave and Andy Bailey.
The layout, which is set by the sea side, has Welsh origins and has a ruined castle.... the grounds of which are being used for a scenic golf course.  The pier is constructed of timber with each individual timber piece screwed into place. Most buildings are scratch built with roofs of genuine hand cut Welsh slate.  There are three further roofs of a thatched style similar to 'Pendon'.  The beach is of real sand, courtesy of Skegness, and is about 20mm deep.  There are over two hundred figures on the layout.

"Grange Road" - Paul Titmuss

Grange Road by Paul and David Titmuss.
"Grange Road is a narrow gauge railway layout designed to fit into a small space. It was built with two goals in mind - to construct a layout to completion and entertain my son. Both were achieved after 8 years!
Whilst the railway has no real location there are three railways that have influenced most of the rolling stock - the Corris Railway, the Glyn Valley Tramway and the North Wales Narrow Gauge Railway.
Nearly all the stock is kit built whilst the scenery and most buildings are scratch built."

RAF Chapple is a model of a WW2 RCAF Fighter Base around 1941/42 (based on RAF Warmwell), when the Royal Canadian Air Force was testing the first Hurricane planes to be fitted with 250lb bombs that were used against enemy shipping and airbases. They flew as 402 Squadron, which became 175 Squadron before they left England for Foreign Service. The Base has a remaining narrow gauge railway left after construction of new hangers and Nissan huts. This is being used to move personnel and equipment around the site and supplying fuel and armament to re-fuelling pits, hangers, workshops and storage areas. The layout is being detailed with many aircraft, and further fine detail each month. It will have two changeable areas so that the scene can be varied.

The L&TR takes its inspiration mainly from the Talyllyn and Festiniog Railways with some support from the Vale of Rheidol and Welshpool Railways.  Started in 1975, it has acquired its own character over the years but none the less has managed to remain faithful to its original ideals of frequent slate trains interspersed with regular passenger and goods workings.  Passenger and goods trains work between Llanmynach and Mynydd-yn-Bwlch or Tawel-Llety in an end-to-end operation whilst the slate trains make circular trips, empty trains run clockwise and loaded run widdershins. Its overall size is 8 feet by 12 feet 6 inches (2.4m x 3.8m).
This layout is celebrating its 30th Anniversary during July 2005. Click HERE to go to the L&T web site for more information and history of this delightful railway.

"Wildschonau" - David & Lynda Coates

Wildschonau is a HOe layout representing Austrian narrow gauge railways and is named after an area in Austria near the proposed railway.

The Austrian narrow gauge railway of the Pinzgauer Lokalbahn ends at Krimml, an extension was proposed but never built. This layout assumes that the railway was extended past Krimml 38 Km to join the Zillertalbahn at Zell Am Ziller.
This extended railway provides a scenic route for tourists visiting the Hohe Tauern National Park and the Krimmler Falle waterfalls.

(64Kb) A cattle train is a most unusual working on the Dutton Bay, such traffic offering normally being carried on the daily goods train. Here just about all of the cattle wagons on the DBT roster leave Anunaka after unloading their load of stock. (60Kb) The goods train pauses at Kelvin on its journey to Anunaka. In the background are the loaded salt wagons waiting to be collected..

A few photographs of "The Whitsend Tramway" by Graham & Caroline Watling. Based on the North Yorkshire coast villages, many buildings have been scratch built and care has been taken to replicate the stonework and architectural features as well as the topography of the local area.
The layout is seen here almost complete after over three years modelling.
